Odoo for Furniture Manufacturing: Custom Orders & BOM Variants

DeployMonkey Team · March 23, 2026 10 min read

Why Odoo for Furniture Manufacturing?

Furniture manufacturing combines make-to-order production, material variety (wood species, fabrics, finishes), and complex logistics. A customer orders a sofa in a specific fabric, color, and leg finish — each combination requires a different BOM. Odoo handles this with configurable products, BOM variants, and integrated production planning.

Product Configuration

# Configurable Product Example: "Milano Dining Table"
# Variants:
# ├── Size: 6-seater ($1,200) | 8-seater ($1,500) | 10-seater ($1,800)
# ├── Wood: Oak ($0) | Walnut (+$200) | Cherry (+$150)
# ├── Finish: Natural ($0) | Dark Stain (+$50) | White Wash (+$50)
# └── Leg Style: Tapered ($0) | Hairpin (+$30) | Trestle (+$80)
#
# Each combination generates a unique BOM:
# "Milano 8-seater Walnut Dark Stain Trestle"
# → BOM: Walnut planks (specific qty), dark stain, trestle legs
# → Price: $1,500 + $200 + $50 + $80 = $1,830

BOM with Variants

Odoo supports BOM lines that apply only to specific product variants. The base BOM defines common components (screws, glue, sandpaper), while variant-specific lines add the correct wood type, fabric, or hardware based on customer selection.

  • Base BOM for common components shared across all variants
  • Variant-specific BOM lines triggered by attribute values
  • Phantom BOMs for sub-assemblies (table top, leg set, frame)
  • By-product tracking (wood offcuts for small items)
  • Material yield calculation (board feet to finished dimensions)

Production Planning

# Workshop Production Flow:
# 1. Order Confirmed → Manufacturing Order created
# 2. Material Check → Verify wood, fabric, hardware availability
# 3. Cutting → CNC/manual cutting per cut list
# 4. Joinery → Assembly of frame and structure
# 5. Sanding → Surface preparation
# 6. Finishing → Stain/paint/lacquer application
# 7. Upholstery → Fabric/leather work (if applicable)
# 8. Assembly → Final assembly of all components
# 9. Quality Check → Finish, stability, dimensions
# 10. Packaging → Protective wrapping
# 11. Delivery → White-glove or freight shipping

Material Management

Furniture uses diverse raw materials with unique tracking needs. Lumber is tracked by species, grade, and board footage. Fabrics by bolt and yardage. Hardware by count. Odoo inventory handles all measurement units and conversions.

  • Lumber inventory in board feet with species and grade tracking
  • Fabric inventory by bolt with yardage tracking
  • Hardware (hinges, slides, knobs) with reorder points
  • Sheet goods (plywood, MDF) by sheet count and dimensions
  • Finish materials (stain, lacquer) by volume with batch tracking

Showroom and eCommerce

Odoo's website builder creates an online catalog with product configurators. Customers select options (size, fabric, finish) and see the price update in real time. Showroom staff use the POS module for in-person sales with the same configuration options.
