Task and Project Organization

Asana provides a polished experience for managing tasks. Multiple views (list, board, timeline, calendar), custom fields, task dependencies, milestones, and portfolios for executive oversight. The UI is clean, fast, and designed specifically for project management workflows.

Odoo Project offers Kanban boards, list views, calendar, and Gantt charts (Enterprise). Task stages are customizable per project. The interface is functional but less refined than Asana's purpose-built design. Where Odoo catches up is in connecting tasks to the rest of your business.

Time Tracking and Billing

This is Odoo's defining advantage. Employees log timesheets against tasks. Timesheet entries can be billed to customers automatically, generating invoices based on recorded hours and agreed rates. Project profitability reports show revenue vs cost in real time. This workflow — track time, bill customer, recognize revenue — is native and seamless.

Asana has basic time tracking but most teams use Harvest, Toggl, or Clockify integrations. Billing requires a separate invoicing tool. Connecting time tracking to invoicing to revenue reporting requires stitching together 3-4 different applications.

Collaboration

Asana is stronger for pure collaboration. Rich task comments, @mentions, project conversations, status updates, and proofing for creative teams. The collaboration features are mature and well-designed.

Odoo uses its mail thread system (Chatter) for task discussion. Log notes, send messages, track activities. It works but is less polished than Asana's collaboration tools. File attachments, activity scheduling, and follower notifications are built in.

Automation

Asana's Rules engine (available on Business plan) allows if-then automation: when a task moves to a stage, assign it, set a due date, add a comment, etc. The rule builder is visual and intuitive.

Odoo automations use server actions and automated rules. More powerful (can trigger across modules — create a purchase order when a task reaches a stage) but require more technical knowledge to configure.

Pricing

Asana Personal is free for up to 15 users with limited features. Starter costs $13.49/user/month, Advanced costs $30.49/user/month, and Enterprise requires custom pricing. For 20 users on Advanced, that is $610/month for project management alone.

Odoo Community (including Project) is free for unlimited users. Enterprise costs $24-44/user/month but includes all 70+ modules. For 20 users, Odoo Enterprise costs $480-880/month — but you get accounting, CRM, HR, inventory, and everything else alongside project management.
