Odoo releases a new major version annually in October. Each version receives approximately 3 years of support (bug fixes and security patches). Understanding this timeline is critical for planning upgrades and avoiding unsupported software risks.

Odoo's LTS Policy
Odoo does not have a formal LTS (Long Term Support) designation like Ubuntu. Every version gets roughly the same 3-year support window. However, some versions become de facto LTS through community adoption:
- Odoo 14 was widely adopted and had extended community support
- Odoo 16 is another widely-deployed version
- Odoo 18 is positioned as a stable choice for 2025-2027
Upgrade Planning
When to Upgrade
- Ideal: 12-18 months after a new version release (bugs resolved)
- Latest: Before your current version reaches end of life

Upgrade Frequency
Most organizations upgrade every 2-3 versions. Common patterns:
- v14 -> v17 -> v20 (every 3 versions)
- v15 -> v18 -> v21 (every 3 versions)
- v16 -> v19 (skipping 2 versions)
Upgrading every version is expensive and usually unnecessary. Upgrading every 3 versions balances feature access with migration cost.
2026 Recommendations
- On v14 or v15: Migrate immediately — you are on unsupported software
- On v16: Plan migration within 6 months
- On v17: Start planning, upgrade before October 2026
- On v18: Stable, no urgency. Evaluate v19 features
- On v19: Current version, fully supported
