What Are Kit Products?
A kit (or bundle) is a product sold as a single item but fulfilled by picking its individual components from inventory. Unlike manufactured products, kits do not go through a manufacturing process — the components are simply grouped together at the time of delivery. Common examples include gift baskets, computer packages (monitor + keyboard + mouse), starter kits, and sample sets. Odoo handles kits through a special BOM type that explodes into components at the delivery stage.
Kit vs Manufacturing BOM
The key difference between a kit BOM and a manufacturing BOM is that kits do not create manufacturing orders. When a kit product is sold, Odoo replaces the kit with its individual components on the delivery order. Workers pick each component separately. There is no assembly step, no work order, and no manufacturing overhead. This makes kits ideal for products that are simply a collection of existing items packaged together.
Configuration
Creating a Kit Product
Create the kit as a storable or consumable product in Odoo. Set the product type as usual with a selling price. Then create a Bill of Materials for this product and set the BOM Type to Kit. Add the component products with their quantities. For example, a coffee starter kit might contain 1 coffee maker, 2 bags of coffee beans, 1 set of filters, and 1 travel mug.
Pricing Strategy
Kit pricing can follow two approaches. Bundle discount pricing sets the kit price lower than the sum of individual component prices, incentivizing the purchase. For example, if components total $150, the kit sells for $120. Convenience pricing sets the kit at or above the component sum, charging for the convenience of a pre-selected combination. Configure the kit product's sale price independently of component costs.

Inventory Management for Kits
Kit products do not have their own stock level. Availability depends on component stock. Odoo checks whether all components are available when the delivery order is created. If one component is out of stock, the kit cannot be fully fulfilled. The kit's effective availability equals the minimum availability across all components — if you have 50 coffee makers but only 30 bags of beans, you can fulfill only 15 kits (each kit needs 2 bags).
Nested Kits
Kits can contain other kits. A deluxe coffee kit might include the basic coffee starter kit plus additional premium items. Odoo explodes nested kits recursively — the delivery order shows all individual components across all nesting levels. This allows you to build complex product bundles from simpler sub-bundles without maintaining separate component lists.
Kit Variants
Combine kits with product variants for configurable bundles. A laptop package might offer different configurations: basic (8GB RAM + 256GB SSD) vs premium (16GB RAM + 512GB SSD). Create product variants for the kit and use variant-specific BOMs to define different component combinations for each variant.
Reporting Considerations
- Sales reporting — Kit products appear as a single line on sales reports and invoices, showing the bundle revenue.
- Inventory reporting — Kit products have no on-hand quantity. Monitor component stock levels individually.
- Margin analysis — Kit margin is the selling price minus the sum of component costs. Odoo calculates this from the BOM component costs.
- Demand planning — Plan component procurement based on kit sales forecasts multiplied by BOM quantities.
