Overview
The Shop Floor module in Odoo 19 Enterprise provides a tablet-optimized interface for operators to process work orders on the production floor. Instead of using the standard backend, operators see a streamlined view with step-by-step instructions, quality checks, and real-time production data. Note: this module is available in Odoo Enterprise only.
Prerequisites
- Odoo 19 Enterprise with Manufacturing module
- Work orders enabled in Manufacturing settings
- BOMs configured with routing operations
- Tablets or touchscreen displays on the shop floor
Step 1: Install Shop Floor
Navigate to Apps and search for Shop Floor (technical name: mrp_workorder or shop floor related modules). Install the module.
Step 2: Configure Work Centers for Shop Floor
Each work center that operators will use on the shop floor needs proper configuration:
- Navigate to Manufacturing > Configuration > Work Centers
- Ensure each work center has a clear name and code visible on tablets
- Set the working hours calendar to match actual shift schedules
- Configure per-product capacity for accurate scheduling
Step 3: Create Detailed Routing Operations
The shop floor interface displays operations step by step. On your BOMs, create detailed operations:
- Name each operation clearly (e.g., "Cut Material", "Weld Frame", "Paint Surface")
- Assign the correct work center
- Set expected cycle times for progress tracking
- Add operation descriptions with detailed instructions for operators
Step 4: Add Work Instructions
For each routing operation, add detailed instructions that operators will see on their tablets:
- Use the description field for text-based instructions
- Attach PDF documents, images, or diagrams to the operation
- Reference quality specifications and safety procedures
Step 5: Access the Shop Floor Interface
The shop floor application provides a dedicated view:
- Navigate to the Shop Floor application from the main menu
- Select the work center to view its queue of work orders
- Each work order shows the product, quantity, and current step
Step 6: Process Work Orders
Operators interact with work orders through the tablet interface:
- Select a work order from the queue
- Click Start to begin the timer for the operation
- Follow the step-by-step instructions displayed
- Complete any quality checks embedded in the operation
- Record the quantity produced
- Click Done to complete the operation and move to the next step
Step 7: Quality Integration
If the Quality module is installed, quality checks appear directly in the shop floor interface:
- Pass/fail checks at specific operation steps
- Measurement checks with tolerance validation
- Photo capture for visual documentation
- Failed checks trigger quality alerts without leaving the shop floor view
Step 8: Monitor Production
Supervisors can monitor production from the shop floor dashboard:
- View active work orders across all work centers
- Track progress — planned vs. actual production quantities
- Identify blocked work orders and bottlenecks
- Review OEE metrics per work center
Community Edition Alternative
Odoo Community does not include the Shop Floor module. Use the standard backend work order interface:
- Navigate to Manufacturing > Operations > Work Orders
- Process work orders from the list or Kanban view
- The functionality is the same but without the tablet-optimized UI
Best Practices
- Mount tablets or touchscreens at each work center for easy operator access
- Write clear, concise operation instructions with visual aids
- Configure quality checks at critical process steps, not every operation
- Train operators on the tablet interface before going live
- Use the dashboard to identify and resolve production bottlenecks daily
